a safe place to store AOL Journals?

i only have a second but i wanted to post my latest findings since the ballyhoo with AOL deleting entire journals because of supposed TOS violations in which they cite improper files being uploaded to FTP (which as far as i can see, aren't really FTP issues at all) but rather a case of "inappropriate linking" to material AOL considers offensive
anywayyyyy .. if AOL has the power and uses the power to delete journals at will, even if afterwards they determine that a mistake was made and there was NO TOS violation, the journal is still gone .. period .. end of discussion

so i need to backup my journal to a safe place since AOL is no longer safe

i discovered a program (free) right here ..
http://www.httrack.com/
here is there blurb for the product .. "It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the "mirrored" website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system."

in other words, creating a mirror of my journal safely on my computer

i had given consideration to moving my journal, entry by entry over to my journal on blogspot .. sheesh .. 2 years worth of entries?

so instead i decided on copying my journal onto my own computer ..

the program took a little tweaking for setting options, specifically the browser identity and HTML footer, which i set for using the HTT Tracker Website Copier ..
everything seems to be working, it only took 55 minutes to copy my entire journal .. much easier than saving each entry separately either on my computer or another journal

so, if anyone else is giving consideration to making your journal "safe", you might want to give this program a try :)

retrieving deleted journals

i was just reading about an AOL member who had his AOL Journal deleted by the "powers that be" .. but that isn't what this entry is about .. this entry is about retrieving deleted journals

the trick is that you have to act quickly !!!  as soon as you discover your journal has been deleted .. if you go to www. google.com, you can bring up their cache of your journal, entry by entry and copy it to a safe place .. including all the comments left for you by your readers

go to
www.google.com
type in the URL for your deleted journal:
http://journals.aol.com/his1desire/GirlsHeadNoise
select: Show Google's cache of journals.aol.com/his1desire/GirlsHeadNoise

this will allow you to copy the first 10 entries .. if you want to copy more entries along with the comments, you need to google the entire URL for each journal entry which will also bring up the comments (example .. google
http://journals.aol.com/his1desire/GirlsHeadNoise/entries/1117)

once you have one entire entry cache googled, merely check the bottom of the journal entry for the previous entries url and copy and paste each of the entries and comments to a "safe place"

you do need to act quickly because the cache will come up empty during the next sweep of your journal if the journal is gone
